The future is here when it comes to laser technology and laser dentistry in Ponte Vedra Beach. Laser operations and surgeries are now performed routinely in the medical field. Laser energy is used for cutting, photochemistry, cooling, nuclear fusion, microscopy, military weapons, scientific instruments and space travel. Our dreams of painless drilling at the hands of a dentist are finally a reality. Laser dentistry has been available since 1990.
Laser dentistry uses energy plus a gentle water spray to perform treatments without heat, without vibrations, without pressure and best of all without pain. Fewer anesthetics are needed or none at all, which makes the experience more comfortable also. The laser produces a very narrow intense beam of light energy that can remove, vaporize or shape tooth surfaces. Removing tooth decay and readying a tooth for filling or a crown is the only one use of laser dentistry. Here are a few other uses of laser dentistry:
- Corrects a condition called tongue-tied
- Laser beams can uncover a partially emerged wisdom tooth
- It can remove something called muscle pulls from orthodontic apparatus
- Used in managing gum tissue when preparing to impression work
- Used in removing swollen gum tissue as a result of disease or medications
- Laser is used in biopsies of gums or soft tissue of the mouth
- Help reduce inflamed gum tissue
- Can remove or reshape excess gums and bones
- Laser beams can treat an abscess in root canal procedure
- Laser treatments have been helpful treating canker sores
- The laser light is used in whitening teeth treatments
The disadvantages of lasers are:
- Lasers can't be used on teeth with fillings already in place.
- Lasers can’t be used to fill cavities located between teeth or around old fillings
- Lasers can’t be used to remove defective crowns, silver fillings or prepare for bridges
- Lasers can’t do finish work like shaping the filling, adjusting the bite or polishing
- Laser treatments can be expensive – your best bet is to contact The Burgess Center about laser dentistry in Ponte Vedra Beach so that they can do a complete assessment.

What is dosimetry and how would a dentist in Saint Augustine use it in orthodontic dentistry? Dosimetry involves measurements and calculation of “doses” for treatments. Medical personnel using dosimetry use their knowledge of physics, anatomy and radiology to try to apply the lowest dosage possible to achieve necessary imaging.
Orthodontic clinics are now routinely use Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). A dentistry study was done to determine the amounts of radiation absorbed by a patient during orthodontic imaging procedures using both CBCT with various scan settings and also compared to the conventional and previously used digital x-ray technology.
Using thermo luminescent dosimeters placed inside a head and neck of a test dummy, at various scan settings using a next generation CBCT machine, and also an orthorpantomograph digital x-ray machine, were recorded in Tuusula, Finland. Both panoramic and cephalometric radiography was recorded. An average sized adult male was used as the basis for the settings used in the testing process. Recommendations from the 2007 International Commission on Radiological Protection, was used for calculating effective doses.
Results were found that CBCT scans, although providing additional benefits for diagnosing and therapeutic results, despite the concept of regulating doses, did actually deliver higher levels of radiation to the test patient than the conventional digital radiography method.
The effective doses for digital panoramic and lateral cephalometric radiographs measured 21.5 and 4.5 μSv. The effective doses at various voxel sizes and field of view settings, ranged from 64.7 to 69.2 μSv for standard resolution CBCT scans (scan time 8.9 s), and 127.3 to 131.3 μSv for high resolution full field of view scans (scan time 17.8 s). The CBCT measured 134.2 μSv for a high-resolution landscape scan with a voxel size as would be used for SureSmile (OraMetrix, Richardson, Tex) therapy (scan time 26.9 s).

- General dentistry: Many times patients’ dental concerns are results of more than one dental problem. Dr. Burgess will work on an overall plan to achieve your general and cosmetic dentistry objectives before any dental surgery. Broken and decayed teeth will often be repaired before whitening in order to ensure a good color match.
- Teeth whitening: It is natural that as we age our teeth yellows due to our natural underlying dentin in the teeth yellowing. Lifestyle issues like drinking tea and wine and smoking added to that and your pearly whites might lose its vigor. A popular offering from Burgess Center cosmetic dentist procedure is their one-hour teeth whitening. Their dental laser can also be used to speed the whitening process along
- Ceramic crowns: For teeth that are badly damaged, a custom-made dental cap can be manufactured to act as a replacement for a crown. Crowns have to be made from durable materials like porcelain, ceramic or gold. Gold crowns in particular are strong and have an advantage over other crowns as they wear down a lot like natural teeth do. Porcelain crowns and ceramic restorations, however, can be colored to produce a natural looking dental replacement.
- Orthodontic braces: The orthodontics specialty is concerned with the treatment of improper alignment of the bite and this is a specialty of Burgess Center. Dr. Burgess will work out an overall plan which might include plastic aligners, ceramic or metal braces or Invisalign braces in order to achieve the required objectives.
